JOB PURPOSE

The Technology Department is the design authority for all products, services and network infrastructure that Telstra provides and manages for its customers. The Architecture Team are also responsible for the design and development of all underlying backbone infrastructure to support those products and services.

The Hosting Architect is responsible for developing detailed engineering plans (inclusive network diagrams, equipment lists, configurations templates, etc.) and supporting the rest of the organisation on those detail technical designs.

The role will also require the individual to provide our customers and own internal support organisation with Tier 4 technical support on all our hosted environments. Often working under high pressure to resolve complex technical problems on mission critical environments.

The successfully candidate will also be responsible for providing the Customer Design Team with technical support in relation to our capabilities to deliver bespoke services and/or assist them in developing new bespoke services and supporting infrastructure.

On larger bids the role would require the individual to act as a member of the bid management team providing the team with direct advanced technical support.

The candidate should also be able to help guide the business to improve our hosted and managed services in innovative new directions.

Primary Responsibilities:

To have full design responsibility for complex mission critical hosting and managed services solutions deployed for customers of Telstra International (UK).
Understand technical limitations and advantages of new Telstra hosted and managed services.
Provide appropriate implementation and support documentation for a given complex solution.
Able to troubleshooting complex technical problems and if necessary design alternate solutions.
Provide technical support as needed for both internal and external customers
Provide technical training sessions for internal staff on technology and product topics.
Compilation of technical data to a standard suitable for order processing and implementation.

Prepare internal solution diagrams and supporting material for new customer solutions (Engineering Plans).
Undertake feasibility checks to ensure suitable infrastructure capacity exists for proposed solutions.
Compile and ensure correct technical content of all necessary approval documentation where full design responsibility exists.
Provide customer advocacy as necessary for all post-sale/TSO implementation issues until resolved
Other duties as assigned by line management
Provide agreed status reports to management as required
Assist with technical responses and strategy for RFP's when assisting the Bid Management team

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Education
Professional qualification or a degree in a technical discipline

Knowledge
Experience in translating business requirements into advanced technical solutions and managed services.
Experienced in the design, implementation and support of enterprise/carrier class hosting environments and the delivery of managed services on those environments.
Experienced in the mass deployment and management of server class operating systems such as Windows 2003/2008 Server, Solaris 10/11 and RH Enterprise Linux.
Experienced in the deployment of Virtualisation technology as an alternative to delivering dedicated managed servers on dedicated hardware (VMware and Xen).
Experienced in the deployment of high density blade based server systems with the emphasis on maximising efficiency by coupling blade systems with Virtualisation technology (HP &VMware).
Experienced in the utilisation of SAN and NAS systems to provide NFS, CIFS, iSCSI or FC based storage to both virtual and dedicated servers.

Experienced in the deployment of environment wide backup services across multiple operating systems and utilising industry leading backup software (NetBackup).
Experienced in the deployment of server monitoring systems to ensure critical resources are monitored and managed.
Experience in the deployment and management of enterprise class database servers including MS SQL (inclusive Clustering).
Experience in the deployment and management of general enterprise class applications such as MS Exchange, IIS and Apache.
Good understanding of the function of Routers, Switches, Firewalls, Load Balancers, VPN Concentrators and the associated underlying technologies.
Skills/Attributes

Be able to translate a business requirement into a technical solution
To have a forward thinking approach to solving customer solution or business issues
A basic knowledge of technology used to comprise Telstra products in the following areas (must have expertise in at least one area):
IP/Ethernet
MPLS/WAN/MAN
International cable systems
